Advanced practice: supporting routes to recognition for pharmacists

09 May 2025
Showcase Theatre

There are a wide range of clinicians in the UK health system who describe their roles as "advanced" (including pharmacists) but the current diversity of job titles and routes to recognition can make it confusing for both individual practitioners and employers to determine who has the right skills for a range of extended roles. For pharmacists in England, there are two key frameworks which can be used to gain external recognition as an advanced clinician: The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Core Advanced Pharmacist Curriculum and the NHS England Multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice. We conducted a mixed-methods project utilising interviews and a survey to understand pharmacists' views and understanding of advanced practice roles and training routes. Our results indicated that there was confusion about the different terms and frameworks, and that many pharmacists felt that existing Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) MSc courses were not a good fit with their training needs. This was an important finding, because NHS England offers specific funding for ACP courses accredited by their Centre for Advancing Practice and it was therefore likely many pharmacists were missing out on a key funded education opportunity. To help address this, we have worked with local employers to develop an MSc programme with the dual purpose of meeting the accreditation requirements of the Centre for Advancing Practice, while also linking to the pharmacist-specific competencies outlined by the RPS. This allows pharmacists to access a key funded route to obtaining an MSc while also developing their profession-specific skills.
