Equal care, equal medications: addressing disability, dysphoria and disparity
10 May 2025
Medicines Optimisation Workshop
Pharmacist
Secondary Care
This training session equips healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to deliver equitable care for people with learning disabilities and autistic patients.
It highlights barriers such as communication challenges, medical bias, and difficulties in accessing gender-affirming treatments. It also emphasises informed consent, ethical prescribing, and practical strategies to improve healthcare experiences, ensuring fair and accessible treatment for all patients, including those experiencing gender dysphoria.
Case studies reveal potential health complications for service users due to the inability to access antibiotics, as well as missed opportunities in cancer screening that may contribute to mortality.
The session will also cover gaps in service provision, as patients with learning disabilities have a significant association with gender dysphoria.
