When sleep goes wrong: insomnia, its burden and management
The session will include a brief overview of physiological changes during sleep, the sleep-wake cycle and the biological drivers of sleep, how insomnia develops and differential diagnoses, guidelines on the management of insomnia and available treatment options.
Learning objectives include:
- A greater understanding of the neurobiology that underlies the sleep-wake cycle.
- An awareness of the symptoms of Insomnia and its impact.
- An understanding of the available guidance on the management of insomnia.
- Learning about the treatment options for insomnia.
- Ability to relate pharmacological options to the neurochemistry underlying sleep.
This session is for all pharmacists and pharmacy staff in primary, secondary or community care that interact with patients presenting with sleep initiation, sleep maintenance, early awakening difficulties no matter the specialism or focus of service delivery.
