National cancer plan: from policy to inclusive consultations

Reducing health inequalities is a key ambition of the National Cancer Plan, yet translating policy into meaningful change in day-to-day cancer consultations remains challenging. This session explores practical approaches to embedding inclusive practice within routine cancer care.
Through BOPA’s EDI-led initiatives, we are developing tools to support equitable care across the cancer pathway. A modified Delphi study is co-producing an evidence-informed inclusive consultation framework with patients, carers and oncology professionals, generating consensus recommendations to support culturally competent, accessible and person-centred consultations for minority ethnic groups, older adults, neurodivergent individuals, and people with physical disabilities.
In parallel, a complementary study has identified gaps in cancer services for people with a learning disability. Insights from learning disability professionals have been translated into practical recommendations to inform a tailored consultation framework, improving communication and support for patients, carers and healthcare teams.
