PrescQIPP practical tools to support greener respiratory prescribing

This session explores the relationship between climate change and respiratory health, highlighting how environmental shifts exacerbate conditions such as asthma and COPD. It outlines national priorities for achieving Net Zero and emphasises the significant contribution of medicines, particularly inhalers, to the NHS carbon footprint.
Most of the session explores practical strategies to support greener respiratory prescribing, including reducing reliance on SABA inhalers, optimising disease control, improving inhaler disposal, and increasing use of lower carbon options. Through education, shared decision making, and effective use of data, healthcare professionals can deliver more sustainable greener respiratory care while maintaining high quality patient outcomes.

  • 1.Describe the impact of climate change on respiratory health and why this drives the need for greener prescribing.
  • 2.Identify national Net Zero priorities relevant to respiratory care and the carbon contribution of inhalers.
  • 3.Apply practical strategies to reduce the environmental impact of respiratory prescribing, including optimising disease control and inhaler choice.
  • 4.Use data tools and resources to monitor progress, support shared decision making, and guide sustainable practice.
