STOMP/STAMP: from guidelines to real change
The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) STOMP/STAMP programme demonstrates how a whole system approach can reduce inappropriate psychotropic prescribing for people with a learning disability, autism, or both. This session will explore how LLR translated national guidance into routine practice through cross sector collaboration, structured training, co produced resources, and strong data governance. A key enabler was the integrated GP STOMP/STAMP template, which standardised review quality and generated both quantitative and qualitative data, allowing the system to monitor outcomes and drive continuous improvement. Targeted GP system searches and the recommended use of ECLIPSE further supported the identification and prioritisation of individuals most at risk. With reviews rising from 735 in 2021/22 to 3316 in 2025/26 and increasing evidence of safe deprescribing, the programme shows measurable clinical impact. Attendees will gain practical, transferable strategies for embedding STOMP/STAMP principles and delivering sustainable medicines optimisation.
- Understand how a whole system, data driven approach can embed STOMP/STAMP principles into routine primary care, improving safety and reducing inappropriate psychotropic prescribing.
- Apply practical tools and processes - including the integrated GP STOMP/STAMP template, GP system searches, and ECLIPSE - to identify priority patients and deliver high quality, structured medication reviews.
- Recognise the value of co produced, accessible resources in improving communication, patient understanding, and shared decision making for people with a learning disability, autism, or both.
- Translate the LLR model into their own local systems, adopting scalable methods that support sustainable medicines optimisation and measurable clinical impact.
