Workshops - North Gallery Suite 6
Suicide first aid- how pharmacy staff can support someone with suicidal thoughts

This practical, interactive workshop will equip pharmacy professionals with the confidence and skills to have safe, compassionate conversations about suicide. Using the *See–Say–Signpost* Suicide First Aid model, the session explores how to recognise warning signs and risk factors, ask clear and direct questions about suicidal thoughts, and respond appropriately within professional boundaries. Through facilitated discussion, real‑world scenarios and supported role‑play, attendees will practise listening skills, challenging stigma and using language that reduces harm. The session also focuses on effective signposting, safety netting and recognising when urgent escalation is required. Suicide remains a significant public health issue, and pharmacy staff are often trusted points of contact who can make a critical difference. Attendees will leave with practical tools, increased confidence, and a clearer understanding of their role in supporting people at risk while safeguarding their own wellbeing.

  • By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • • Recognise key risk factors and early warning signs associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviour.
  • • Initiate and navigate clear, compassionate conversations about suicide using direct, non judgemental language.
  • • Respond appropriately to disclosures of suicidal thoughts, listening effectively and managing conversations within professional boundaries.
  • • Signpost and escalate confidently, identifying appropriate support services and actions based on assessed level of risk.
