Supporting the next generation of independent prescribers

09 May 2026
Leadership & Professional Development Theatre

Independent Prescribing (IP) is transforming the pharmacy profession, yet many newly qualified prescribers report feeling underprepared for the realities of clinical practice. This session explores how experienced prescribers, employers, and educators can better support pharmacists on their IP journey — from training through to confident, competent practice. Drawing on real-world experience at Clinilink, Mehmoona Usman will share practical strategies for building clinical confidence, navigating complex prescribing decisions, and accessing peer support networks. Whether you are a trainee, newly qualified prescriber, or supervisor, this session will provide actionable insights to help bridge the gap between qualification and practice. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the support structures available and how to champion the next generation of independent prescribers within their own organisations.

  • Identify the key challenges faced by newly qualified independent prescribers and how to address them effectively
  • Understand the role of mentorship, supervision, and peer networks in building prescribing confidence
  • Apply practical frameworks for supporting trainee and newly qualified prescribers within your organisation
  • Recognise opportunities to advocate for and develop independent prescribing talent in your workplace
