Supporting women's health; safe prescribing and procedures when breastfeeding and helping parents meet their feeding goals

09 May 2026
Technology & Innovation Theatre
The UK has some of the lowest breastfeeding rates globally, with eight out of ten women stopping before they want to [UNICEF]. Medication use is a key challenge, as breastfeeding parents often struggle to find clear, accurate advice about medicines or medical procedures. Although most medications & procedures are compatible with breastfeeding, conflicting or missing information can lead to unnecessary early cessation. Conversely, we know that many women, when advised to stop breastfeeding to take a medication, choose not to take it rather than stop, leading to inequalities in access to healthcare. Healthcare professionals have a duty to protect & promote breastfeeding where that is a parent’s feeding preference – do you ask your patients if they are breastfeeding and do you know how to access evidence-based information? Amanda Da Costa, Clinical Supervisor and Pharmacist Volunteer, will introduce the Drugs in Breast Milk Service and the resources available to support informed decision-making, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding or giving any human milk to infants, whether directly, or given expressed or donor milk. Attendees will leave this session with an increased awareness of the resources available to support breastfeeding families with questions about medications and procedures and the importance of helping parents to meet their feeding goals.
