Overprescribing to optimisation: reducing medicines waste

Sajida and Catherine will discuss the drivers and impact of overprescribing and medicines oversupply. They will highlight national guidance that prioritises this important work and provide practical evidence based strategies to optimise prescribing and reduce wastage. They will discuss the data, tools and resources available to help healthcare professionals identify, review and reduce prescribing using shared decision making. They will focus on PrescQIPP resources developed to support this important area of work.

  • To be aware of the drivers and consequences of overprescribing and medicines oversupply, including clinical, safety, and economic impacts​
  • To apply evidence-based strategies to reduce inappropriate prescribing and excess supply​
  • To be aware of PrescQIPP data tools, resources and educational materials to support medicines optimisation and reduce overprescribing
