What did it take to deliver the World's First COVID-19 vaccine?

13 May 2022
Clinical Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy Technicians

On the 8th of December 2020, the world’s first non-trial dose of a Covid-19 Vaccine was administered at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. Within this presentation the speakers will look to explore and reflect on what it took on a personal, team and Trust level to help enable this. The roll out highlighted the essential part Pharmacy play in the medicines journey from pharmacy distribution through to the patient. As part of the medicines management approach, the team had to develop new skills with regard to the storage of sensitive medicines and how to implement a fast acting training platform for the complex preparation methods required by clinical staff. "As it turns out Pharmacy is more than just supply and distribution"

Learning outcomes:

  • Team work was key to achieving our goal.
  • New skills had to be learnt e.g. handling -80oC frozen vaccine and use of an ULT freezer.
  • Training of nurses and support with vaccine preparation was highly valued and appreciated.
  • Flexibility in working pattern was required – working hours and days
