CVD prevention: identifying and treating Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and high cholesterol

Lowering cholesterol is known to reduce cardiovascular disease(CVD) risk. Some people have a genetic condition: Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH), where a genetic alteration leads to increased levels of cholesterol and an increased risk of CVD.
National targets in the NHS Long Term plan aim to reduce the number of heart attacks in the population by 150,000 and also find 25% of people with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia by 2029.

We now have increased access to genetic testing for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a selection of cholesterol lowering medications and primary care QOF targets are supporting optimisation of cholesterol lowering medications.

In this talk I will discuss Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and different approaches to finding people with the condition. I will describe different treatment options for lowering cholesterol and use case examples to show how we use them in practice.

  • 1.Describe Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and its impact on cardiovascular disease risk
  • 2. Understand cholesterol blood test results and cholesterol targets
  • 3. Recognise if someone might have Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and refer them to secondary care.
  • 4. Understand different treatment options to reduce cholesterol
