Unlocking the potential of non-professionally registered staff in hospitals
Medicines Reconciliation is a vital pharmacy service for patient safety. Resource and capacity are common challenges in delivering this for all in-patients in most hospital settings. At South Tees Hospitals, we’ve innovatively up skilled our non-qualified workforce to support achieving our Medicines Reconciliation goals. We have trained and coached ward-based pharmacy assistants to take medication histories. Medication histories then enable qualified pharmacy technicians and pharmacists to complete medication reconciliation more efficiently. This innovative new approach to working has increased medicines reconciliation rates, improved patient safety, and enhanced staff satisfaction and development.
