Use of artificial intelligence in oncology pharmacy
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of oncology pharmacy, enhancing safety, efficiency, and personalization of systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT). This session will explore real-world examples of AI adoption across NHS cancer services — from diagnostics to pharmacy verification — and highlight how pharmacists can play a central role in ensuring the safe, ethical, and effective use of AI in practice. Drawing on the work of the BOPA AI Specialist Advisory Group (SAG), we will discuss how AI can support decision-making, streamline verification, and predict toxicity or treatment delays, as well as the practical challenges of implementation. Attendees will gain insight into the current evidence base, emerging innovations, and professional frameworks shaping the future of AI in oncology pharmacy.
- Describe the current role of AI across NHS cancer services, including its application in diagnostics, SACT, and pharmacy workflows.
- Explain how AI-driven tools can support oncology pharmacists in prescription verification, toxicity prediction, and workflow optimization.
- Discuss real-world evidence and NHS case studies demonstrating AI’s impact on safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
- Recognize the key ethical, regulatory, and data governance considerations for AI implementation in oncology practice.
- Understand the role and objectives of the BOPA AI Specialist Advisory Group (SAG) in supporting safe and effective AI adoption across the profession.
- Identify practical steps for oncology pharmacists and MDTs to engage with and prepare for AI integration in clinical services.
