Enabling people to make the most out of their medicines using the NICE Shared Decision Making Guideline

When done effectively, shared decision making (SDM) enables decisions about care to align with best available evidence AND the person’s informed preferences and values. Key to this are meaningful conversations with people to determine what really matters to them about their condition at this point in time and what a good outcome would look like for them. NICE published a guideline on SDM in July 2021. It makes recommendations for individual clinicians as well as organisations to enable this to become routine practice in line with the Montgomery ruling in 2015, which, put simply, states that clinicians should not make decisions for patients, but with patients instead. This workshop will explore how pharmacy leaders can encourage and facilitate SDM in their organisation, and ensure that pharmacy teams are exemplars of best practice. We’ll share practical ideas on how to put the NICE guidance to work to deliver medicines optimisation strategic objectives, and help participants formulate a plan for action
