What’s next for clinical pharmacy in 2025? Predictions and priorities

As we step into 2025, the future of clinical pharmacy in the UK holds exciting potential for transformation and growth. There are both opportunities and challenges ahead that require adaptability, resilience, and collaboration to embrace the significant shifts anticipated across the healthcare landscape. Here’s what could be on the horizon...

A new government, a new budget

The recent change in government brings both uncertainty and opportunity. The budget in the Autumn determined funding priorities, and advocacy for the profession will be key. Clinical pharmacy professionals must continue to collectively voice the value they bring to healthcare delivery and clinical decision making and highlight the need for strategic investment in hospital pharmacy. We can expect shifts in policy that prioritise patient accessibility, innovation, and workforce development to continue to ensure timely access to medicines.

Tackling medicines shortages

Addressing the persistent issue of medicines shortages will remain a priority. Clinical pharmacy professionals will help navigate supply chain disruptions and ensure continuity of care through innovative solutions such as advanced stock management systems. Collaboration with industry stakeholders, including suppliers and policymakers will be essential to mitigate risks and maintain patient trust through transparency.

Independent prescribing opportunities

By the end of 2025, independent prescribing will be a core competency for many clinical pharmacists. The expanding scope of independent prescribing will allow greater autonomy in managing patient care and contribute significantly to reducing healthcare bottlenecks. Challenges will remain going into 2026 around the seamless integration of the new cohort of independent prescribers while supporting the existing workforce and providing sufficient training resources and frameworks to deliver this.

Pharmacy First updates

The Pharmacy First initiative is expected to revolutionise primary care. With expanded funding and recognition of community pharmacies as a frontline resource, there will be a greater need to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, particularly GPs, to ensure there is cohesion and interoperability. As 2025 unfolds, enhanced training and integration with primary care networks will be vital to making this initiative a success and demonstrate its value.

Digital tools revolutionising clinical practice

Technology will continue to revolutionise clinical pharmacy practice. From e-prescribing platforms to AI-driven medication management systems or even drone delivery systems, digital tools are streamlining workflows and improving patient outcomes. Leveraging tools like remote consultations, clinical decision support software, and electronic health records need to be embraced to help better integrate within multidisciplinary care teams and ease pressure.

Expanding clinical services for chronic disease management

The burden of chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and COPD on healthcare systems is increasing. Clinical pharmacy professionals are uniquely positioned to lead in managing these conditions through medication optimisation, patient education, and collaborative care models. Expanding focus on structured medication reviews, supporting adherence, and using data-driven approaches will help personalise treatment plans.

Looking ahead to 2025

2025 will be another transformative year for clinical pharmacy, marked by advancements in care delivery, technology, and professional practice. As the sector continues to rapidly evolve, it will be exciting to watch the developments unfold.
