Ewan Maule - North East and North Cumbria NHS Integrated Care Board

Ewan Maule

Director of Medicines and Pharmacy, North East and North Cumbria NHS Integrated Care Board
Ewan Maule is the chief Pharmacist and director of medicines and pharmacy at the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), where he provides strategic leadership on medicines optimisation, pharmaceutical services, and clinical commissioning across one of the largest health systems in England. In this role, he is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, and value-driven use of medicines, and for shaping policy that improves patient outcomes while supporting the sustainability of NHS services. As chair of the national ICB Chief Pharmacist Network, Ewan plays a leading role in influencing medicines policy at a system level, working closely with national bodies, professional organisations, and regional leaders. He is also an elected member of the English Pharmacy Board at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, where he contributes to professional leadership and advocacy for the pharmacy workforce. His major strategic programmes include co-chairing the ICB Prevention Board, leading system-wide work on healthy weight and the treatment of obesity, and driving improvements in clinical effectiveness and medicines value to ensure the best outcomes for patients and the NHS. He is widely recognised for his collaborative approach, his focus on clinical leadership, and his ability to navigate the complex interface between national policy and local delivery. Alongside his NHS leadership roles, Ewan is an Honorary Professor at Teesside University, supporting the development of future pharmacy professionals through teaching, mentoring, and research collaboration. His work bridges operational delivery, policy, and education, ensuring that the voice of pharmacy is central to the evolving NHS landscape. Ewan is committed to building a culture where medicines are used to their maximum benefit, clinicians are empowered to lead change, and the pharmacy profession is recognised as an essential driver of integrated, patient-centred care.
