Fan Cheng is a senior paediatric pharmacist at Great Ormond Street Hospital specialising in immunology. With expertise in rare immunodeficiencies, she facilitates the utilisation of innovative and repurposed therapies to improve children’s access to medicine and bridge the gap between existing evidence and patient care in paediatric medicine. Fan has been awarded a NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship in 2021. Her current PhD research project statistically analyses blood samples collected from patients during routine care using mathematical models (pharmacokinetic model). Children have different pharmacokinetic properties at different stages of life. These models elucidate how children of varying ages metabolise medicines, incorporating factors like organ function and pharmacogenetics characteristics that may affect drug handling to account for variances between patients. Through her work, Fan aims to optimize treatment efficacy and safety, contributing to targeted and safer medication regimes for paediatric patients.
