Lauren joined Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2018 as an ATO, and qualified as a registered pharmacy technician in 2021. At the end of 2023 she was successful in joining the Cancer Team, shaping the future for Pharmacy Technicians within this sector. Although a challenging role with lots to learn, it is extremely rewarding and one that she is passionate about. The field of Cancer Services is diverse and always developing, which allows me to continually develop my knowledge and expand my skills. The role involves specialist education and counselling for patients receiving their 1st cycle of IV chemotherapy and beyond (including chemotherapy, supportive medicines, how to manage side effects and when to call triage), advanced drug history taking improving patient safety and support with timely prescribing of SACT working with the MDT. Currently in the process of developing an Oral SACT handbook to standardise counselling/education and information to patients to improve adherence and safe handling of oral chemotherapy for our pharmacy staff and nurses to use with patients Although a challenging role with lots to learn, it is extremely rewarding and one that I am passionate about.
